Pooles Coachways ... when nearly part of Berresfords.

Pooles Coachways ... when nearly part of Berresfords.

In early 1985, the remaining members of the Poole family decided to put their business up for sale. For those not familiar with their operation, principally they worked through the western North Staffordshire mining villages of Audley, Halmerend, Alsagers Bank (where they had their garage), Scott Hay and Silverdale into Newcastle under Lyme. Their fleet and operating territory was a mirror of South Wales bus operation. Latterly a fleet of BET style Leyland Leopards bore the brunt of the service work, though they did have a very pleasant 1968 AEC Reliance bought new. Anyway, I digress... on a buying spree, spurred on by deregulation, Jim Berresford started the wheels in motion for the purchase of the company with a view toward significant expansion into an area previously only brushed against. Integration and sharing of resources was implemented, including new timetables drawn up in Stonier's offices at Tunstall. Pooles fleet was beefed up with 'imports' from the main fleet, one of which was this ex London Country RP class AEC Park Royal Reliance, JPA 120K. Time tells us that sadly JAB fell ill, and subsequently died leaving the final signing over uncompleted. Pooles returned briefly to an independent existance, PMT took over Berresfords and Stoniers and also belived they had acquired Pooles though this wasn't the case. The Poole family did finally sell their business to local haulage company G&B Mc Cready. The two Berresford group buses which had been loaned, the AEC above and an ex Lothian Seddon Midi, CFS 108L, for some reason remained in the 'Pooles' fleet.
JPA 120K is seen drifting down through Silverdale en route to Newcastle some time in 1986. Silverdale was the home of North Staffordshire's final deep mine.

Seddon Midi Demonstrator

Seddon Midi Demonstrator

PBU951M was a Seddon demonstrator built to the SELNEC body style save for the destination display but fitted with the standard type dual purpose seating for 25. It was new in November 1973 and was exhibited at the Scottish Motor Show, Kelvin Hall, Glasgow that year. It first went on demonstration with Leeds City Transport (Where this shot is taken) before moving on to trials with Halifax JOC and then to London Transport where it was used on route C11 'Camden Link' in comparison trials with the Bristol LHS. After it was sold by Seddon it was bought by the National Coal Board at South Normanton, Derbyshire joining three similar Seddon Midi Buses that the NCB had bought new.

Recently I have read in a book by Jim Soper about the history of Leeds City Transport that this particular bus was on demonstration for ten days in December 1973 before moving to Halifax JOC. It is claimed in this publication that this bus was fitted with a Gardner 6LXB engine and was the first bus to be so fitted with the 6LXB in a horizontal postion. Now I am not one to instantly dispel the claim but after discussing this one at length with my fellow flickrite Renown we both conclude that a Gardner 6LXB coupled with its drivetrain would not fit either at the front of this chassis nor inbetween the 9' 6" wheel base!

Can anyone enlighten us further about this claim?
